Not long ago, even a 5km run felt impossible. I'd done ultra trail races, I'd trained hard my whole life, and suddenly my body felt completely unfamiliar. I was doing everything I'd always done - and going backwards. I remember thinking "is this it now?"
But when I stopped pushing through and started actually looking at what was happening, I realised perimenopause had changed the rules. Not broken them. Just changed them. And once I understood that, everything shifted. My training started feeling manageable again. My confidence came back. I remembered I was still an athlete - just a different one now.
